Alright, so to start you need to know what you are going to be doing design wise. You should either have some type of idea in your head, or a drawing that you can use as a reference. I found it easier to have a drawing I made prior to use. This way I know what I am trying to make a ‘real’ image of a wolf look like.
Above if the image of my female character Tarrank. Name and design are mine to use and mine only. Her design is complicated, but incorporates many of the styles that people want to add or change for their characters.
Her design involves the following:
- Changing of eye color(s)
- Changing of fur color / marking(s)
- Adding jewelry
- Adding spikes
- Adding a background
- Blending and creating fur
Once you have a design you are on to picking an image of what I call a ‘BASE’ images. This image will be a wolf that has a lot, if not all, of your characters color. If you had a white wolf you would want an Arctic wolf. If you have a gray wolf, you would want a Timber wolf or Gray/Grey Wolf…etc.
I selected a Spanish wolf for my Base image. Tarrank’s coat is mainly a brown/red/orange. This is the best image for me to se when wanting to photo manipulate an image of her. At least that is my opinion.
When selecting an image you need to make sure that there is NO copyright attached. Meaning there cannot be any names over the image or ‘do not use’ bellow it. Deviantart has a nice link that you can use. ‘Resource & Stock Images’, is a link that will take you to a bunch of images you can search for. These images were posted but users who are more then okay if you borrow and use them. They simply wish that you give them created and do not claim the original image as your own.
Once you have your design and Base image you are ready to start. If you follow through this tutorial, you will be able to create a wolf of your own. However, you do not have permission to create Tarrank’s design for your own personal character. I made this tutorial to help you out if you are unsure how to use GIMP software.
